1. Crosses between Blue Andalusian and Gold-Laced Wyandotte bantams were made in an effort to determine the inheritance of the black-laced blue plumage pattern of the former. 2. The laced phenotype of the Gold-Laced Wyandotte had been shown to depend upon homozygosity of the linkage of a eumelanin intensifier, melanotic (Ml), with a pattern gene (Pg) in the presence of eumelanin restrictor, columbian (Co), and the brown (eb) allele at the E-locus; whilst the Blue Andalusian is homozygous for the extended black (E) allele at the E-locus and heterozygous for the eumelanin dilution, blue (Bl). 3. All patterned fowl in the F2 generation were laced, indicating an absence of segregation at the Co, Ml and Pg loci, and therefore that the genotype of the laced plumage pattern of the Blue Andalusian is E/E Bl/bl+ Co/Co (Ml-Pg)/(Ml-Pg).

Özet: Bu araştırma, Denizli Irkına ait bir tavuk sürüsünün telek rengi ve canlı ağırlık bakımından incelenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışmada Denizli ırkı 388 adet günlük civciv ve bunların büyütülmeleri ile elde edilen piliçler kullanılmıştır. Civciv, piliç ve ergin çağdaki dişi ve erkeklerde telek renkleri ile değişik haftalarda canlı ağırlık ortalamaları araştırmada ele alınan özellikler olmuştur. Dişi ve erkeklerin farklı vücut bölgelerindeki telek renkleri incelenmiş, 22 hafta sonunda, dişilerde kanat ve boyun bölgesinde, pamukkır, kırmızı ve siyah renklerin dağılımları her iki bölge için %21.1, 17.1, 61.8 iken; erkeklerde, kanatta pamukkır %43.6, alhoroz %6.8, demirkır %47.4, pekmez kefi %2.2 bulunmuştur. Denizli ırkı sürüde 22 hafta sonunda ortalama canlı ağırlıklar dişilerde 1423.73 g iken, erkeklerde 2060.14 g olarak (p<0.001) belirlenmiştir. Sürüde farklı telek renklerinin tespit edilmesi, bu sürüde hayvan ıslahı çalışmalarında yararlanılması olası birçok kalitatif genin bulunabileceğini ifade etmektedir.Anahtar sözcükler: Canlı ağırlık, Denizli tavuğu, tüy rengi. An investigation on the feathering colour characteristics and body weight of a Denizli Fowl flockSummary: This investigation was held to study the feathering colours and body weight estimates of a Denizli fowl flock.Live material of this study was consisted of 388 Denizli day-olds and their grown ups. Feather colour in different age groups and average body weights in different weeks were considered in the study. It was found that the distributions of cotton grey, red cock and black colours of the feather and neck regions in females at 22 nd weeks were the same for both regions, that is, 21.1, 17.1, 61.8 %, while the distribution of cotton grey, red cock, dark speckled grey and light mohagany in males at the same age were 43.6, 6.8, 47.4 and 2.2 %, respectively. Mature body weight of the males and females in the 22 weeks of age were 2060.14 g and 1423.73 g respectively (p<0.001). To determine of different feather colours showed that this Denizli flock may have many useful qualitative genes, which may be useful for animal breeding operations.

“…In studies on the inheritance of plumage patterns, Moore and Smyth (1972a;b) demonstrated linkage of approximately 10 crossover units between the eumelanin extending gene melanotic (Ml) and a lacing gene (Lg) and, in addition, linkage of approximately 17 crossover units between Db and an autosomal barring gene (Ab). Carefoot (1985;19866) produced evidence to show that both Ab and Lg were the same as the pattern gene Pg which, as shown by Carefoot (1986a), is the basis for 4 plumage pattern phenotypes, all of which are arrangements of eumelanin on a background of phaeomelanic pigmentation.…”

A single comb Partridge Wyandotte bantam male was mated with two Indian Game bantam females to produce a double heterozygote of the linked eumelanin extension (Ml) and pea comb (P) genes. Four females so produced were mated with their sire to provide a backcross to the double recessive. Forty crossovers occurred among the 86 progeny suggesting linkage of approximately 46 units between Ml and P. The eumelanin restrictor gene (Db) had previously been shown to be linked with P, Ml and Pg by approximately 28, 10 and 17 units respectively and, furthermore, the locus of Ml had been shown to lie between the loci of Db and Pg. The locus of Db appears therefore to lie between the loci of P and Ml and hence the relative positions of the loci of the 4 genes is P, Db, Ml, Pg.
