“…Under-colour to tone with surface colour" (Hawksworth 1982). The laced phenotype of the Silver-Laced Wyandotte, the pattern produced when a single eumelanic ring conforms to the edge of the feather and completely surrounds a white centre was shown by Moore and Smyth (1972) to result from homozygosity of the brown allele (<? *) at the E-locus, a eumelanin restricting 175 176 W. C. CAREFOOT gene, Columbian (Co), and a linkage of a eumelanin intensifier melanotic (Ml) with a lacing gene (Lg).…”

“…In studies on the inheritance of plumage patterns, Moore and Smyth (1972a;b) demonstrated linkage of approximately 10 crossover units between the eumelanin extending gene melanotic (Ml) and a lacing gene (Lg) and, in addition, linkage of approximately 17 crossover units between Db and an autosomal barring gene (Ab). Carefoot (1985;19866) produced evidence to show that both Ab and Lg were the same as the pattern gene Pg which, as shown by Carefoot (1986a), is the basis for 4 plumage pattern phenotypes, all of which are arrangements of eumelanin on a background of phaeomelanic pigmentation.…”
