Inheritance of the sesquiterpenes longipinenone and hydroxy‐longipinenone within the Achillea millefolium complex (Compositae)

Abstract: Three selfing and 13 crossing experiments between tetraploid individuals of Achillea ceretanica, Achillea collina, Achillea distans ssp.‘styriaca’ Saukel (ined.), and Achillea pratensis (Achillea millefolium complex, Compositae), five F1 crosses, three backcrosses and one further selfing experiment were carried out in order to study the inheritance of longipinenone (1) and its hydroxyl derivative (2). From these crossings, 1294 plants were studied by qualitative thin layer chromatography. Progenies from parent… Show more

“…The most frequent results of inheritance studies suggested mono and oligogenic con trol of several monoterpenes in different coniferous species and more recently mo lecular studies have reported many plant genes that encode enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of terpenes (Nishizawa et al 1992, Plomion et al 1996, Raguso & Picher sky 1999, Shepherd et al 1999, Fischer et al 2001, Trapp & Croteau 2001, Fäldt et al 2003. Some seasonal changes have been confounded with epigenetic variations that occur in monoterpene proportion.…”

“…198 The inheritance of the sesquiterpene longipinenone, and of a hydroxy derivative, has been studied within of the Achillea millefolium complex using crossing experiments. 199 Compounds 193 and 194 with an unnatural tricyclic hydrocarbon skeleton, named quirogane, have been prepared by rearrangement of a longipin-2-ene derivative. 200 12 Caryophyllane, panasinsane, botryane and silphiperfolane A stereocontrolled approach to the core of the caryophyllane sesquiterpene pestalotiopsin has been described.…”
