Inheritance of microsatellite loci in the white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus)

Abstract: Nine tetramer motif (GATA)n microsatellite systems were developed for use in the white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus. We report inheritance patterns for these nine systems, which range from one possible disomic system to tetrasomy and octosomy, with some systems containing null alleles. Because of the complex modes of inheritance underlying these systems and the highly duplicated nature of the genome, we propose each allele be scored as its own dominant marker, similar to AFLPs or RAPDs. The utility of thi… Show more

“…Since our method can be extended to include codominant markers, the strength of our maximum likelihood based method lies in the fact that it allows the development of more general QTL allelic effects than linear or additive effects as seen in regression-based methods. Rodzen and May (2002) suggested scoring multi allelic SSR markers as individual dominant markers unless the markers' underlying mode of inheritance are known because different loci may have different inheritance patterns.…”

“…Rodzen and May (2002) reported possible disomic to tetrasomy and octosomy systems in white sturgeon (A. transmontanus) with around 500 chromosomes. Therefore, since the mode of inheritance may be locus-specific in a given species (Pyatskowit et al, 2001;McQuown et al, 2002;Rodzen and May, 2002), it is necessary to use inheritance data to determine gametic segregation patterns before using microsatellite markers to analyse population genetic variation and pedigree reconstruction. In this study, we provide the first inheritance describe of allelic combination at microsatellite loci in Chinese sturgeon.…”
