Inheritance of C4 Enzymes Associated with Carbon Fixation in Flaveria Species

Abstract: Activities and subunit levels of three C4 enzymes were determined for F, hybrids between C4 and C3-C4 Flaveria species. For phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and pyruvate orthophosphate, dikinase, enzyme amounts in the hybrids were close to the mid-parent means. However, activity and subunit levels of NADP-malic enzyme were approximately one-half the mid-parent mean.

“…No silver-stained band corresponding to PPDK could be detected in F. pringlei, while all other samples (except F. trinervia x F. brownii) have a single band in the PPDK position (10), although apparently at a slightly lower mol wt in F. brownii.…”

“…Only one band is present in F. linearis, at approximately 66 kD (10). F. brownii has a heavily stained NADP-ME band at the same position as in F. linearis, slightly higher in mol wt than the heavily stained band in F. trinervia, although NADP-ME activity was nearly identical in both species (Fig.…”

“…While the Flaveria experiments provided some insight into whether aspects of C 4 were dominant or recessive in F1 hybrids, the sterility of the hybrids precluded quantitative trait loci analysis for C 4 traits (Brown et al, 1986(Brown et al, , 1993Cameron and Bassett, 1988;Holaday et al, 1988;Cameron et al, 1989). Similarly, the oat-maize addition lines provided insight into certain aspects of C 4 regulation but failed to reveal global regulators of the pathway.…”
