Inhaled mannitol for the treatment of cystic fibrosis

Abstract: Inhaled dry powder mannitol is well established for use in bronchial provocation testing. Inhaled mannitol also increases mucociliary clearance, and therefore could have a role in treating chronic suppurative lung disease. There have been a number of studies in cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. An international Phase III trial has just been published that suggests the use of regular inhaled mannitol increases lung function and reduces exacerbation frequency in cystic fibrosis. Inhaled mannitol exerts its eff… Show more

“…Indeed, it may provide an alternative mechanism on how hypertonic saline or inhaled mannitol helps ameliorate lung inflammation in cystic fibrosis patients, 84,85 since this disease has been recognized recently to harbor defective autophagy and to benefit from its induction by other stimuli. 86 It may also be of relevance for kidney inflammation since immune cells recruited to the kidney medulla become exposed within seconds to a steep increase of environmental osmolality and since autophagy has been implicated in various immune cell functions including phagocytosis and antigen presentation.…”
