Inhalation Challenge Test in the Diagnosis of Occupational Rhinitis

Abstract: Although IC is a resource-intensive methodology, the evaluation of nasal symptoms and signs together with bronchial reactions saves time and expense compared with the organization of multiple individual challenges. We encourage the simultaneous evaluation of both nasal and bronchial reactions in IC tests.

“…SpeciWc nasal provocation test (sNPT) is the gold standard for diagnosis of occupational rhinitis (OR) (Moscato et al 2008) and diVerent approaches, i.e., rhinoscopy, nasal patency, nasal symptom scores are used alone or in combination to assess the response (Moscato et al 2008;Gosepath et al 2005;Airaksinen et al 2008;Castano et al 2009). The monitoring of nasal inXammatory response after sNPT is considered relevant to the objective conWrmation of OR (Moscato et al 2008).…”

“…As no additional value seems to be apparent, a weak recommendation to use it in differentiating etiologies is given. An exception must be made regarding occupational rhinitis in which provocation testing undoubtedly is very useful (137). Nasal challenge with allergen can be very useful in the Cytology and histology.…”

“…The diagnosis of occupational rhinitis is often complex and requires nasal provocation tests with the relevant occupational agent (144,(1314)(1315)(1316)(1317)(1318). The challenge can be carried out in the form of a natural exposure, especially if the relevant allergen is unavailable.…”
