“…Mills et al found a similar situation for inguinal hernia repairs performed in Australia between 2000 and 2019, which were also significantly below the RACS target, with only 22.2% performed as day surgery [ 26 , 27 ]. A survey of Australian patients who underwent inguinal hernia repair as a day procedure found that 88% were satisfied with their experience and would choose day surgery again [ 28 ]. The benefits of day surgery include a decrease in the risk of hospital-acquired infections, a reduced healthcare cost, and a decreased risk of cancellation due to the lack of hospital beds [ 26 ].…”

“…Moreover, the topic delves into prospective paths in hernia repair, encompassing recognized areas of study that need to be addressed, possible advancements, and the significance of personalized medicine. The efficacy of hernia repair techniques is a crucial factor in the comparative comparison [ 44 ]. The Bassini, Shouldice, and McVay procedures are traditional open techniques with long-standing historical relevance.…”

“…Inpatient stays for most people undergoing inguinal hernia repair in Australia may have several explanations. Patient‐reported outcomes following same‐day surgery are at least as good as those after overnight stays, 3,7 but other factors may be barriers to routinely providing this option (Box 3). 3,4,7 Increasing same‐day inguinal hernia repair rates will consequently involve a complex interplay of pre‐ and post‐operative decisions by hospitals, surgeons, and patients.…”
