Introduction Inguinal hernia is the most common hernia among the abdominal wall hernias. This study aims to estimate the long-term recurrence rate and laparoscopy-related risk factors for inguinal hernia at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Buraidah, Al Qassim region, Saudi Arabia. Methods A single-center retrospective study of all laparoscopic hernia repair patients admitted in the surgical department of King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Buraidah, Al Qassim region, Saudi Arabia from January 2016 to July 2020. Results A total of 64 patients were included in the present study. All patients were male with a mean age 42.27±15.79 years. Out of 64 patients, 71.9% were married and 11 (17.2%) were smokers. Most patients were found to be in the elective priority (89.1%) and the emergency cases were 10.1%. A total of 6.3% had a recurrent hernia and 93.7% had a primary hernia. After testing the association of hernia repair and the patient-related factors, it was observed that there is no significant association between recurrent hernia repair and the mean age (p=0.072), body mass index (BMI) (p=0.962), smoking (p=0.347), married patients (p=0.196), and diabetes (p=0.446). Conclusion A total of 6.3 % of patients developed a recurrent inguinal hernia after laparoscopic repair. In contrast to the literature, this study showed that patient-related risk factors were not statically significant among our patients. However, the reasons behind the recurrence rate tend to be multifactorial, including surgical, technical, hospital capability, and patients factors. Therefore, early recognization and management of these risk factors are essential to prevent further cases.

Background: Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty is the commonly done surgery for inguinal hernias. The study was done with the objective to evaluate the postoperative complications, and the recurrence rate associated with Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty.Methods: This was a prospective clinical study conducted at Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre, Bangalore during the period from May 2015 to April 2016. A total of 50 patients with inguinal hernia were included in the study. All the patients underwent Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty. Outcome of the surgery was evaluated by the incidence of postoperative complications and recurrence rate of hernia after 1 year follow up.Results: Intraoperative complications were observed in 3 (6%) patients. Immediate postoperative complication was seen in 6 (12%) cases. Stiffness in lower abdomen was noticed in 13 (26%) cases. The average post-operative hospital stay was 4.06±1.43 days and the average post-operative ambulation time was 1.52±0.64 days. The average time taken to return to work post-operatively was 8.68±2.63 days. Long term complications included are foreign body sensation and chronic pain at operated site. After 1 year follow up the prevalence of both the complications was decreased to 4% and 6% respectively. No recurrence of hernia (0%) was noticed after 1 year follow up.Conclusions: Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty was considered as the best surgical procedure for inguinal hernia repair because of low recurrence rate (0%) and postoperative complications.

Background: Lichtenstein’s tension free mesh repair is the most commonly performed in open inguinal hernias. The present study was done by comparing Lichtenstein Repair (LR) v/s posterior wall repair (PR)+ Lichtenstein repair (LR) of direct Inguinal Hernias to compare the technique of both surgeries and its outcome like postoperative complications and recurrence rate.Methods: This study was conducted in SNMC Agra where patients of unilateral male direct inguinal hernia were included. A total of 60 patients were taken and divided into two groups (A and B) randomly of 30 each. In group A patients were operated by LR and in group B patients were operated by PR+LR and followed up for a period of six months. The outcomes of the both techniques were compared.Results: Mean age was 48.3 years in group A and 49.5 in group B. The mean duration of surgery for group A is around 29.34 min and group B is 46.28 min which was significant. The pain was not statistically significant in both groups on day 1 and 3. There was 1 (3.3%) recurrence in group A and no recurrence in group B. Post-operative complications were similar in both groups.Conclusions: LR+PR were comparatively better than only LR in all direct inguinal hernias because of low recurrence rate (0%).
