Autotrophe Energieversorgung betreiben die chemo‐autotrophen und photoautotrophen Bakterien sowie alle chlorophyllhaltigen Einzeller. Die Aufnahme der für den Stoffwechsel benötigten gelösten Stoffe erfolgt hier durch die Zellmembran (Permeation). Alle übrigen Einzeller ernähren sich heterotroph. Sie nehmen die lebensnotwendigen Stoffe durch Endocytose und/oder Permeation auf. Auch Paramecium (Abbildung 1), die wohl bekannteste Ciliaten‐Gattung, lebt heterotroph. Die Nahrung besteht vorwiegend aus Bakterien, kleinen Algen und Flagellaten.
