Infrequently Performed Studies in Nuclear Medicine: Part 2

Abstract: Nuclear medicine is a diverse medical field, encompassing a wide range of studies. Many studies are performed on a daily basis, whereas some nuclear medicine studies are performed on a more infrequent basis. The following article is the second article in a 2-part series on infrequently performed studies in nuclear medicine. The procedures reviewed include CSF shunt imaging, brain death scintigraphy, testicular scanning, quantitative lung perfusion studies, lymphoscintigraphy, and salivary gland scintigraphy. “…In the setting of suspected biliary leak, a variety of imaging modalities, including ultrasound, CT, MRI and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) can be used [3,[19][20][21][22][23]. Although one could argue that ERCP provides a chance for correcting the underlying abnormality, this is only the case for a limited set of leak locations.…”

“…Clinical Indications in the Acute Care Setting.-Scintigraphic assessment of CSF shunt patency is typically performed in the acute care setting when there are clinical reasons for suspecting that the shunt is malfunctioning (43,44). Initial clinical manifestations may be relatively nonspecific and may include headache, lethargy, and difficulty concentrating.…”
