Infrastructure Strategies for Achieving the Global Development Agendas in Small Islands

Abstract: Small island developing states face particular challenges to ensure their infrastructure promotes social, economic, and environmental well‐being. Closing the achievement gap for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) involves prioritization and coordination across multiple sectors. With an application to the country of Saint Lucia, this paper develops a stakeholder‐driven analysis framework integrating four interdependent infrastructure sectors (electricity, water, wastewater, and solid waste). Drawing on ex… Show more

“…It is widely acknowledged that infrastructures are crucial to achieving significant development outcomes, i.e., poverty (SDG1), health (SDG3), education (SDG4), economic (SDG8) and environmental (SDG 12, 13, 14, 15) targets [ 73 ] through collaborative partnerships (SDG17) [ 74 ]. This can be of utmost importance, since many of these SDGs were identified as of high priority (Table 2 ).…”

“…[153,158] Although seawater desalination can be efficient in supplying water to waterfront areas, this technology usually requires well-developed infrastructure, which is too costly for those small island developing states. [159] However, the air in island areas has adequate moisture, making SAWH a promising solution for water supply issues in these regions. Wang et al [42] developed a large-scale SAWH device by using activated carbon fiber felt-silica sol-LiCl as sorbents for island climate.…”
