“…There is ample evidence in the literature demonstrating that such shifts occur when the phosphate-water hydrogen bonds are weakened and the number of water molecules hydrogen-bonded to the phosphate group is decreased. This has been shown for phosphatidylcholine (Arrondo et al, 1984;Mellier & Diaf, 1988), PtdEtn (Sen et al, 1988) and phosphatidylserine (Dluhy et al, 1983;Casal et al, 1984Casal et al, , 1989. No shift of the asymmetric P02-band occurred during the gel-fluid transition, at either pH 9.5 or pH 5.0, but a shift was clearly observed associated to the lamellarhexagonal phase transition.…”

“…1. In DPPC both pre and main transition T m are clearly observed [11,22] at 36 • C and 42 • C. The addition of a high hexanol concentration results in a broadening and in a shifting to the lower temperature of 30 • C of the main transition, whereas the pre transition appears to be suppressed. These results confirm the disordering effect of alcohol on the lipid hydrocarbon chains and are in agreement with literature data on DPPC [9], and the data on DMPC [19] at lower alcohol concentration.…”

“…The stretching vibrations of the NH3' groups are the main part of the broad band complex in the region 3,350-2,250 cm-'. The CH2 groups are fixed in the trans position because their b(CH2) vibration is observed as a sharp band at 1,467 cm-1 (21,22).…”
