Surfactants are one of the main groups of pollutants released into aqueous solutions due to human activities and their harmful effects have been proven on human. In this study, first, magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MMWCNTs) were synthesized and then, the effects of operating parameters such as surfactant concentration, adsorbent dosage, and pH values were analyzed on the adsorption process. MMWCNTs were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The optimal adsorption conditions were achieved at initial pH = 4.6, adsorbent concentration = 0.5 g/L, and initial SDS concentration = 15 mg/L. In addition, the equilibrium of sorption reached after 120 min and the maximum capacity of SDS for monolayer coverage was found to be 61 mg/g at 25°C. Kinetic studies were performed under optimal conditions and the sorption kinetics was described using the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental data were studied using Freundlich, Langmuir, and Sips models. Finally, the experimental data were fitted reasonably by Langmuir isotherm. The results demonstrated that MMWCNTs with respect to their high adsorption capacity, relatively low equilibrium time, and capability to be separated from aqueous solutions (after adsorption) could be applied to wastewater treatment.

Abstract-The increasing level of water scarcity is a significant issue in South Africa. This is due to many factors such as global warming, population growth as well as water pollution. There is thus a great need for the development of effective, affordable and readily available resources for water treatment in order to sustain the presently limited resources. During this study, Bentonite clay was subjected to impregnation with the anionic surfactant, Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) for the purpose of removing heavy metals from solution. Characterization of the Bentonite clay was executed by making use of XRD-, XRF-as well as FT-IR spectroscopy. Pseudo first-order and Pseudo second-order kinetic models were used for the purpose of modelling the adsorption kinetics. The parameters that were tested and varied in this study were adsorbent dosage and contact time. The natural Bentonite clay (NB) adsorbed some of the copper(II) and lead(II) in solution; the adsorption affinity of all adsorbents for lead(II) was higher than that of copper(II). The bentonite clay that was impregnated with SDS (SDS-B) showed a greater effectivity in adsorbing both copper(II) and lead(II) as compared to NB. The SDS impregnated clay's affinity for copper(II) and lead(II) was 21.5 mg/g and 28.6 mg/g, respectively. The impregnation of Bentonite with SDS may thus be considered to increase the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent by increasing the number of binding sites available for ion exchange on the surface of the natural Bentonite.

In this work, lead sulfide nanostructures were successfully synthesized by a new one-step method via the gas-solution precipitation from lead(II) acetate and thiourea mixture solution in the ammonia atmosphere. The structure and morphology of the PbS nanostructures were determined by means of powder X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the effects of contact time, final pH of reaction mixture, concentrations of reagents, temperature, and presence of surfactant on the purity, morphology and size of the as-prepared PbS were studied. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of these nanostructures was also evaluated by decolorization yield of Congo red aqueous solution under ultraviolet irradiation.
