INFRARED SPECTROGRAPH SPECTROSCOPY AND MULTI-WAVELENGTH STUDY OF LUMINOUS STAR-FORMING GALAXIES ATz≃ 1.9

Abstract: We analyze a sample of galaxies chosen to have F 24 μm > 0.5 mJy and satisfy a certain IRAC color criterion. Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra yield redshifts, spectral types, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) luminosities, to which we add broadband photometry from optical through IRAC wavelengths, MIPS from 24-160 μm, 1.1 mm, and radio at 1.4 GHz. Stellar population modeling and IRS spectra together demonstrate that the double criteria used to select this sample have efficiently isolated massive st… Show more

“…cuts 0.05 < [3.6] − [4.5] < 0.4 and −0.7 < [3.6] − [8.0] < 0.5, where [3.6] denotes the AB magnitude in the 3.6 μm band (and likewise for the 4.5 and 8.0 μm bands). Extensive follow-up has confirmed the reliability of this criterion for selecting galaxies at 1.5 < z < 3 (Huang et al 2009;Desai et al 2009). These sources are referred to as the IRAC peakers hereafter.…”

“…Younger et al (2009) have studied the FIR properties of a similar Spitzer-selected sample, based on MIPS 70 and 160 μm detections and MAMBO 1.2 mm observations. This sample (see also Huang et al 2009) is selected based on IRAC colors, and 24 μm flux densities (see Fig. 7, Table 2 and Sect.…”

“…The sample of Lo09 is based on the same criteria, but is biased toward sources brighter at 24 μm, with 819 μJy on average vs. 566 μJy for the present sample. The sample of Farrah et al (2008) is similar but aimed at "4.5 μm-peakers"; the sample of Huang et al (2009) and Younger et al (2009) is based on different IRAC criteria, but they indeed select almost exclusively "5.8 μm-peakers" (Sect. 5.1).…”

“…Rigby et al (2008) investigate the rest-frame 8 μm luminosity of galaxies at z ∼ 2 as a function of total IR luminosity and find a similar trend. Using Spitzer/IRS, Huang et al (2009) also report ULIRGs with high PAH-to-total IR luminosity ratio at z ∼ 2. Our results show that there are extreme starbursts with ULIRG luminosity even at z ∼ 1.…”
