Infrared Detection with Temperature Sweep for Stability Determination of Ru-ON Metastable States

Abstract: A novel method is proposed for studying the thermal decay of the oxygen-coordinated nitrosyl metastable states. Having examined 18 different ruthenium nitrosyl complexes, we observed that, upon photoinduced rotation from Ru-NO to Ru-ON coordination, the frequency of the nitrosyl valence bands shifts, on average, by 126 ± 15 cm–1. The thermal stability of the product Ru-ON state is qualitatively characterized (decay temperature, Arrhenius activation energy, and pre-exponential factor) using infrared absorption … Show more

“…The population of MS1 is about 5%. The band exhibits a shift to lower energies compared to the GS band by 150 cm -1 , which is characteristic for nitrosyl ruthenium complexes [2,12,71,[95][96][97]. The concomitant decrease of intensities of the NO 2 bands is most probably related to the nitrosyl isomerization and partial NO release (see below) (Fig.…”

“…The known photo-induced metastable states with the oxygen-coordinated nitrosyl group have the nitrosyl valence vibration shifted by 120–150 cm −1 from the initial ν (NO) absorption. 49 In the IR spectra of the studied {Ru} and {ZnRu 2 } compounds, a new band appeared at 1720 cm −1 in both cases (Fig. 7).…”

“…Upon blue‐light irradiation at 77 K, two new bands build up at 1804 and 608 cm –1 . The 1804 cm –1 band was assigned to the valence vibration of the isomeric O ‐coordinated nitrosyl group ( MS1 ) based on the 131 cm –1 shift from ν GS (NO) . The band at 608 cm –1 is the spectral feature to the Ru–ON valence vibration.…”
