Infrared Aluminum Metamaterial Perfect Absorbers for Plasmon‐Enhanced Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract: Matured surface chemistry and excellent chemical stability have enabled gold to become the material‐of‐choice for plasmonic sensing in both visible and infrared wavelength range. Here, successful surface functionalization of metamaterials made from a low‐cost abundant plasmonic material, aluminum, with phosphonic acid and subsequent detection of the CO vibration mode via surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy is demonstrated. The metamaterial consists of infrared perfect absorbers fabricated by col… Show more

“…We utilized such facile tuning methods and investigated their performances as SEIRA substrates. Recently, Al nanostructures or metamaterials have received a lot of attention to study the possibility of using Al as alternative plasmonic materials10383940. Here we directly compared the SEIRA signals from Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films coated on top of Al and Au nanotriangles and the results are shown in Fig.…”

“…In this section, we provide overviews and highlight the key concepts of the next generation of mid-IR absorption www.advopticalmat.de spectroscopies in designing various IR resonant antennas with different geometries [36,[42][43][44] and new materials, including aluminum, [45,46] graphene, [47,48] and dielectric materials. [49,50] In Figure 3a, Fano-resonant asymmetric metamaterials show strong near-field enhancement at the gap as well as sharp spectral features, operating in the mid-IR range.…”

“…An alternative shape of the nanoantennas, namely, disks, was employed to design the PAs for SEIRS in Ref. [136]. Chen et al used the layer stack Al/Al 2 O 3 /Al and nanosphere lithography to structure the Al top layer to spheres with a hexagonal lattice.…”
