Information skills, searching behaviour and cognitive styles for student-centred learning: a computer-assisted learning approach

Abstract: Undergraduates were tested to establish how they searched databases, the effectiveness of their searches and their satis faction with them. The students' cognitive and learning styles were determined by the Lancaster Approaches to Studying Inventory and Riding's Cognitive Styles Analysis tests. There were significant differences in the searching behaviour and the effectiveness of the searches carried out by students with different learning and cognitive styles. Computer-assisted learning (CAL) packages were de… Show more

“…Nisbett & Norenzayan, (2002) viewed cultural psychology as an analysis of cultural environments and norms that affect the way people interact and think. This notion of culture that affects cognition and learning is supported in both anthropological and psychological studies ranging from Wood, Ford, Miller, Sobczyk, & Duffin (1996); Riding & Rayner (1998) Supporting pedagogy equity through understanding cultural psychology and culturally responsive practices (Gay, 2000) is integral to our research and is viewed as an enabler for the development of technology enhanced learning environments. Of course there are the inherent differences in research perspectives to be considered in any analysis of how or why people do what they do.…”

“…Concludes that evaluating medical student searches for evidence based information is an effective way of evaluating students' searching proficiency and the adequacy of the instruction they receive. Wood et al (1996) conducted a study of the exploitation by undergraduates of CD-ROMs, BIDS (Bath Information and Data Service), and information services on the Internet. Undergraduates were tested to establish how they searched CD-ROM databases over a range of subjects areas; the effectiveness of their searches and their satisfaction with them.…”
