Sources of climate change information used by newspaper journalists in Tanzania

This article assesses the information sources used by Tanzanian newspaper journalists to collect climate change information. The main sources of climate change information consulted by newspaper journalists in Tanzania are climate change experts and daily events, such as community meetings and other relevant social gatherings. These sources are interactive – enabling journalists to obtain climate change information – and easily accessible, and use and provide instant responses. It was also found that deficient use of other potential sources of information, such as libraries, printed materials and Internet websites, coupled with overarching challenges that limit newspaper journalists from seeking, covering and reporting information on climate change, may affect the quality and quantity of climate change information published in Tanzanian newspapers. All the stakeholders involved in the fight against climate change and journalism colleges should collaborate and devise strategies aimed at building the capacity of newspaper journalists, editors and reporters in their daily activities.

Cette étude qualitative constitue l'étape empirique d'un projet portant sur les comportements informationnels des membres de l'Union des écrivaines et des écrivains québécois (UNEQ). Grâce à un cadre théorique inspiré des travaux de Pierre Bourdieu sur le champ littéraire, repéré également dans la littérature, elle décrit les pratiques des écrivains quant à leurs besoins, recherche, utilisation et diffusion d'information, unissant les données recueillies lors d'un sondage, une analyse de contenus web et des entrevues. Les résultats montrent que les avantages et désavantages apportés par le numérique créent parfois un sentiment d'incohérence entre les ressources utilisées et la diffusion en ligne. Par ailleurs, la relation avec les professionnels de l'information pourrait être repensée à l'étape de la création du texte, quant à l'organisation du paratexte numérique et pour la compréhension des outils web à la portée des écrivains. Cela dit, il faudrait que cela participe d'une transformation plus large du champ, car la perception de la légitimation continue pour l'instant de suivre les voies traditionnelles de l'illusio. This qualitative study constitutes the empirical component of a project on the informational behaviour of members of the Union des écrivaines et des écrivains québécois (UNEQ), a writers' union located in Montreal, Quebec. Using a theoretical framework inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's work in the literary field, also found in literature on the topic, the study describes the practices of writers in terms of their needs, research, use and dissemination of information by bringing together data gathered via a survey, an analysis of online contents, and interviews. This paper presents a method to map user needs and integrate serendipitous search behaviors in search algorithm development: the living lab approach. This user-centered design approach involves technology users during technology development to catch unexpected insights and successfully innovate. This paper focuses on the preliminary findings of a living lab case study to answer the question how this methodology reveals fine-grained information about users' serendipitous search behaviors. The case study involves a specific user group, media professionals who work in broadcast television and use audiovisual archives to create audiovisual content, during the development of new search algorithms for a large audiovisual archive. Research insights are based on data gathered during one co-design workshop, and ten in-depth semi-structured interviews with media professionals.Findings stipulate that these users balance socio-technical constraints and affordances during creative retrieval to (1) find exactly what is sought; and (2) increase the possibility of serendipitous, unforeseen search results. We conclude that modeling these search processes in terms of improvising with constraints and affordances enables an effective articulation and channeling of user-technology interaction insights into new technology development. The paper suggests next steps in the living lab approach to further understand serendipitous search and creative retrieval processes.
