Information rates in Kerr nonlinearity limited optical fiber communication systems

Abstract: Achievable information rates of optical communication systems are inherently limited by nonlinear distortions due to the Kerr effect occurred in optical fibres. These nonlinear impairments become more significant for communication systems with larger transmission bandwidths, closer channel spacing and higher-order modulation formats. In this paper, the efficacy of nonlinearity compensation techniques, including both digital back-propagation and optical phase conjugation, for enhancing achievable information ra… Show more

“…q, r represents the indices of the memory k is nonlinearity index and R c and R b exhibit the leading and lagging delay tap lengths, respectively. Since, in [62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71], it was established that GMP is better as compared to MP, therefore for simplicity, evaluation with GMP is included in this paper.…”

“…For silica based fiber, the typical value of n 2 varies between 1.2 × 10 −20 m 2 W −1 and 3.2 × 10 −20 m 2 W −1 [27]. From (42), it is clear that the nonlinear part of the refractive index n is proportional to the optical intensity |E 0 | 2 . This effect is termed as the Kerr effect [27].…”

“…This leads to a frequency chirping effect [7,[41][42][43], which interacts with the CD and causes the spectral broadening of the optical pulse. The IXPM is the result of the refractive index change proportional to the intensity of the neighbouring pulses in the same channel [7,[41][42][43]. The IXPM yields a timing jitter between the co-propagating pulses, which leads to performance degradation.…”

“…Several techniques have been reported to improve the capacity of RoF communication systems [9][10][11]. The performance of multiple modulation formats, such as dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK), dual-polarization 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-16QAM), DP-64QAM, and DP-256QAM, was studied in C-band systems with different transmission distances.…”
