With the proliferation of the social web, questions about information quality and optimization attract the attention of IS scholars. Question-answering (QA) sites, such as Yahoo!Answers, have the potential to produce good answers, but at the same time not all answers are good and not all QA sites are alike. When organizations design and plan for the integration of question answering services on their sites, identification of good answers and process optimization become critical. Arguing that 'given enough answers all questions are answered successfully,' this paper identifies the optimal number of posts that generate high quality answers. Based on content analysis of Yahoo! Answers' informational questions (n=174) and their answers (n=1,023), the study found that seven answers per question are 'enough' to provide a good answer.

Abstract. Understanding the characteristics of a "good" team and members diversity affects the outcomes group in a question of growing importance for the organizations, for their competitive advantage relies more and more on innovation, produced by virtual cooperation on knowledge production. In this study, we propose a method to forecast the future quality of an online knowledge production community or online epistemic community by studying the composition of the group who initiated them (the "core members" of, in this case, an article). First, we set a team building period which is defined as the period of 120 days after article creation in order to construct this "core members" group. Second, we explore the effects on article quality of both group and member diversity. Core members' characteristics are learned from their previous behavior. The analysis is based on the French Wikipedia project. Our results show that the most important attributes of initial core member to have a high quality article are average reputation, diversity's contribution, participation, and group size. We also find no significant effects of experience diversity and reputation during the team building period.

Open content production platforms typically allow users to gradually create content and react to previous contributions. Using detailed edit-level data across a large number of Wikipedia articles, we investigate how past edits shape current editing activity. We find that cumulative past contributions, embodied by the current article length, lead to significantly more editing activity, while controlling for a host of factors such as popularity of the topic and platform-level growth trends. The magnitude of the e↵ect is large; content growth over an eight-year period would have been 45% lower in its absence. Our findings suggest other open content production environments are likely to also benefit from similar cumulative growth e↵ects. In the presence of such e↵ects, managerial interventions that increase content are amplified because they trigger further contributions.JEL Classification: D24, L23, L86, M11, O31
