Information about the Position of the Coherent Spinodal Curve in the Al−Zn System by Means of the Course of the SAXS Intensity at Elevated Temperatures

Abstract: The course of the back‐ground intensities Itot in the small‐angle X‐ray scattering SAXS region in dependence on T is used to evaluate the position of the coherent spinodal curve for six Al−Zn alloys ranging in zinc content between 12 and 35 at%. Although, when applying this method, the information about Itot is gained from T > Tcohsp the obtained results agree within the range of experimental error with those reported in the literature. Details of the applied method to determine Tcohsp are outlined.

“…From (iii) and (iv) one can conclude that the growth of the G P zones is hindered by Mn additions. This effect is already known from the A1-2 st.% Zn-1 at.% Mg (KORNGIEBEL; LOFFLER et al 1986) as well as A1-2 at.% Cu alloys (DZUONG, LOFF-LBR) with additions of Mn. It is discussed in terms of the trapping of vacancies by Mn a t oms.…”

“…Mg additions). I n order to improve the mechanical properties and stress corrosion resistance, in the recent past, Mn was added to several technically used Al-based alloys (KORN-GIEBEL; LOFFLER et al 1986;DZUONG, LOFFLER). Concerning the effect of Mn additions to higher concentrated Al-Zn alloys not much information is a t hand.…”
