Informatics in Radiology: Radiology Gamuts Ontology: Differential Diagnosis for the Semantic Web

Abstract: The Semantic Web is an effort to add semantics, or "meaning," to empower automated searching and processing of Web-based information. The overarching goal of the Semantic Web is to enable users to more easily find, share, and combine information. Critical to this vision are knowledge models called ontologies, which define a set of concepts and formalize the relations between them. Ontologies have been developed to manage and exploit the large and rapidly growing volume of information in biomedical domains. In … Show more

“…Semantic technologies have been used to construct a variety of different applications and workflows in radiology. The use of ontologies to build imaging differential diagnosis systems has been described [ 32 , 33 ]. Semantic tagging of imaging and pathology reports has been used to automate radiologic-pathologic follow-up, by matching biopsy results with preceding imaging exams [ 34 ].…”

“…We consider this ectopic pregnancy image annotation application, with its underlying ontology and knowledge base, a step toward a clinical decision system for ectopic pregnancy diagnosis. Research in CDSS based on ontologies has demonstrated differential diagnosis assistance in Human Genetics [ 46 ] or in conventional Radiology [ 47 ].…”

“…The Radiology Gamuts Ontology defines a knowledge model for differential diagnosis in radiology [13]. An ontology of biomedical imaging has the potential to support the multi-scale understanding of disease by integrating radiological imaging and quantitative histopathology imaging with clinical and genomics data [14].…”
