Influenza burden in children newborn to eleven months of age in a pediatric emergency department during the peak of an influenza epidemic

Abstract: Our results confirm the high prevalence of influenza-related morbidity in infants during the epidemic peak. One child in three consulting to the pediatric emergency room had a virologically confirmed influenza infection regardless of the body temperature. Every fifth child with influenza was admitted to hospital, which corresponds to an admission rate of 237 per 100 000 children 0 to 11 months of age.

“…Other studies have detailed a lack of respiratory symptoms among influenza cases, but those findings were primarily among children. In 2002, a study in France found 30% of influenza‐positive inpatient and outpatient children had minimal or no respiratory symptoms 10. Although we did not enroll neonates in our study, Bender et al 11…”

“…Such surveillance for respiratory syndromes, including SARI, has been shown to effectively identify influenza cases,9 and several studies have also confirmed influenza infection among hospitalized and non‐hospitalized patients with undifferentiated febrile illness 4, 7. In young children, influenza patients often present for medical treatment with only fever;10 one recent study found that 19% of 106 influenza‐positive hospitalized infants <3 months old had fever but no respiratory symptoms 11…”

“…Especially in infancy, wheezing frequently is associated with respiratory viral infections and allergy; about 20% of these children have recurrent wheezing episodes and might become asthmatic patients (1)(2)(3). Therefore, influenza virus vaccination is strongly recommended for children under 3 years of age during the peak influenza season (4)(5)(6)(7). However, vaccination rates are low among children with recurrent wheezing, due to frequent hospital visits and hospitalizations.…”

“…En estudios realizados en EE.UU. y Francia se comunicó que durante la estación gripal, la gripe confirmada por laboratorio era responsable del 28,8% de todas las visitas al servicio de urgencias de niños menores de 5 años, y del 33% de las visitas al servicio de urgencias de niños entre 0 y 11 meses, respectivamente [94,119] .…”
