Influenza and Influenza-like Viruses in Children in the Epidemic Season 2015/2016 in Poland

Abstract: Influenza is an infectious disease caused by influenza A and B viruses. Children are the group which is the most exposed to influenza and influenza-like infections. They are considered as carriers of influenza infections in the population. In the epidemic season 2015/2016 more than 8000 samples were tested, of which over 30 % specimens were collected from patients aged 0-14 years. In 42.3 % cases the influenza or influenza-like viruses were confirmed. The most common subtype was A/H1N1/pdm09. Analysis of posit… Show more

“…Based on the data available on the NIZP-PZH website [ 13 ], it is known that influenza infections and suspected infections in children account for 30% to 48% of the total number of infections in the last 4 epidemic seasons, 2015–2016 through 2018/2019 [ 11 ]. Similar results were obtained in the epidemic seasons 2014–2015, 2015–2016, and 2017–2018 [ 10 , 15 , 16 ].…”

“…There was a lower incidence of respiratory syncytial virus compared to the preceding 2015/ 2016 season, but the predomination of this virus among all influenza-like viruses was consistent (Cieślak et al 2017). This confirms the notion that respiratory syncytial virus is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract infection among children.…”

“…These data coincide with those provided by other European countries (WHO 2017). This is in contradistinction to the preceding 2015/2016 season when the predominant variant was rather the A/H1N1/pdm09 subtype and when, in the latter part of the season, frequent influenza B types were observed; the finding unseen in Poland in 2016/ 2017 (Cieślak et al 2017). In children aged 0-14 years, 445 cases of influenza and influenza-like viruses were confirmed.…”

“…Children are known to be the population cohort most exposed to influenza and influenza-like infections, and are therefore a very important group in the spread of influenza virus in the population [ 31 ]. Furthermore, the generally low severity of COVID-19 infection in this population is associated with a high incidence of asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic infection, making children efficient carriers of this condition too.…”
