“…The link between self-rated health and adverse outcomes, although well established, is poorly understood. Two small trials, of a dance intervention in adolescent girls (40) and a combined physical activity/dietary modification program in community-dwelling adults in Japan (41), have shown potential modifiability of self-rated health. In population studies, self-rated health is a comprehensive, inclusive, and informative measure of health status (42).…”

“…A dance intervention focusing on the 'joy of movement' successfully improved self-rated health scores among girls (aged 13-18 years) with internalising problems at 8-, 12-and 20-month follow-up (8-month difference in mean change 0.30, 95% CI −0.01 to 0.61; 12-month difference in mean change 0.62, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.99; 20-month difference in mean change 0.40, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.77). 23 Aerobic capacity (p = 0.001) and upper body strength (p = 0.002) has also been found to significantly increase for…”

“…A dance intervention programme for adolescent girls with internalizing problems, i.e., with stress and psychosomatic symptoms, was developed and a randomized controlled trial was performed by a Swedish research team and published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2013 (Duberg, Hagberg, Sunvisson, & Möller, 2013). Evaluations show that the intervention improved self-rated health at 12 and 20 month follow-up (mean difference 0.62 and 0.40) and was a positive experience (Duberg et al, 2013).…”

“…Evaluations show that the intervention improved self-rated health at 12 and 20 month follow-up (mean difference 0.62 and 0.40) and was a positive experience (Duberg et al, 2013). In a qualitative study, girls who had participated in the dance intervention expressed that the intervention had given them a feeling of being free, and increased self-trust and confidence (Duberg, Möller, & Sunvisson, 2016).…”
