Abstract

Beta-titanium alloys for use as biomaterials are very interesting from the perspective of obtaining a reduction of the elastic modulus, which together with good mechanical properties, avoid the problems of stress shielding that, induce bone reabsorption. The obtaining process of these alloys is complex because the refractory elements that are normally used to stabilize the beta phase (Nb, Ta, Mo). Powder metallurgy is a relatively simple technology that allows the design of custom alloys, presenting ease in alloy modification, but this technique also presents some disadvantages, such as porosity, lack of diffusion or lack of grain size and phase transformation control.
