The efficiency in the initial growth of trees can be related to the ability of the seedlings in adapting to different light intensites in the enviroment. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of different levels of shading in the initial growth of Tabebuia aurea and Angico (Anadenanthera macrocarpa) in the nursery phase. The experiment was conducted at the Federal Rural University of Semiárido located in Mossoró-RN. The seeds of A. macrocarpa and T. aurea were collected from parent trees and donated by the Caatinga/ UFERSA / Petrobras Project, where, afterwards, they were processed. The composting used in the experiment was coconut fiber, after the substrate was placed in 55-cm³ tubes and organized in plastic supports. The seedlings were submitted to three levels of shade, full sun (absence of shade), shade of 50% and 80%. For the different levels of shading, mean values of the height/diameter ratio of the neck were obtained of 3.74 (A. macrocarpa) and 1.57 (T. aurea) for cultivation in full sun, 0% of shading, indicating that the growth of this cropt may have better results under these conditions. The highest values of the Dickson Quality Index (DQI) were observed in seedlings grown under a lower shade level of 0.03454 and 0.11719. The species T. aurea shows little tolerance when subjected to high levels of shading, showing that the luminosity interfere in the initial growth of the species. A. macrocarpa, also acquired a better development in full sun, showing less progress at higher levels of shading.

Salt stress is a threat to irrigated agriculture, especially in semi-arid regions, as it can cause irreversible damage to the photosynthetic apparatus at any stage of plant development, reducing chlorophyll biosynthesis, which compromises the photochemical efficiency and the photosynthetic process of plants. In this respect, phosphorus fertilization stands out as an alternative to mitigate the effects of salt stress on plants. Therefore, the present study investigated the growth, gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, and photochemical efficiency of sesame cv. BRS Seda irrigated with saline water and fertilized with phosphorus. The experiment was carried out in pots adapted as lysimeters in a greenhouse in Pombal - PB, Brazil. Treatments were distributed in randomized blocks and analyzed in a 5 × 4 factorial arrangement with five levels of electrical conductivity of water (ECw: 0.3, 1.1, 1.9, 2.7, and 3.5 dS m-1) and four phosphorus rates (40, 70, 100, and 130% of the recommended dose for pot trials), in three replicates. The 100% recommendation consisted of applying 300 mg P2O5 kg-1 of soil. Sesame growth, chloroplast pigments, and gas exchange decreased with water salinity above 0.3 dS m-1. The application of 100 and 130% of the recommended phosphorus rate minimized the effects of salt stress on CO2 assimilation rate and photosynthetic pigment synthesis. The increase from 40 to 130% of the recommended phosphorus rate did not change the photochemical efficiency of sesame cv. BRS Seda at 60 days after sowing.

Theoretical framework: The areas affected by salinity have increased in recent years, becoming a limiting factor for plants, negatively interfering with their growth and development. As a result of these effects, knowing species that tolerate this adverse salinity condition is fundamental, both from an environmental aspect and from a scientific point of view. Objective: This research aimed to verify the effects of salinity on the growth and accumulation of organic solutes of Cnidoscolus quercifolius seedlings. Method: The treatments consisted of five levels of NaCl (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM), distributed in entirely randomized design, with four replications. The seedlings grew in ‘Leonard’ pots, containing washed sand and nutrient solution, kept under saline conditions for 60 days. The parameters analyzed were height; stem diameter; roots, stem, leaves, shoot, and total dry mass; and amino acids, proteins and total soluble sugars content. Results and discussion: Salinity reduced linearly all parameters evaluated, especially at the highest levels of salt in the medium, indicating that the C. quercifolius seedlings were intolerant to the imposed salinity, not being able to adjust osmotically. Research implications: Possibility of revegetation of areas with saline soil problems, reintegrating them into the production system. Originality/value: To know the forest species capable of surviving in areas affected by salinization, enabling the adoption of recovery techniques and practices.
