Interference and Economic Threshold Level for Control of Beggartick on Bean Cultivars

-The aim of the study was to assess the interference and determine the economic threshold level of beggartick damage on bean crops. Treatments consisted of bean cultivars (IPR Uirapuru, BRS Supremo, BRS Campeiro, Fepagro 26, BRS Esplendor and IPR Tuiuiú) submitted to competition with ten beggartick populations. We evaluated plant population, leaf area, ground cover and shoot dry mass of beggartick. Dry mass of shoots of beggartick fitted better to the hyperbolic model, and grain yield losses due to beggartick interference were estimated satisfactorily by this model. BRS Esplendor and IPR Tuiuiú were more competitive than the others in the presence of beggartick. Sowing of BRS Esplendor, IPR Tuiuiú and Fepagro 26 increases the level of economic damage, justifying the adoption of control measures only for higher densities of beggartick. Increase in grain yield, commercial price of beans, herbicide efficiency and reduction in control cost decrease the threshold level for weed control, justifying application of control measures for lower densities of beggartick. Atrazine Reduces the Critical Period of Weed Interference on Narrow Row Corn

-The objective was to determine whether a change occurs in the critical period of weed interference prevention in narrow row corn with the use of atrazine and whether there is influence of the herbicide on crop yield components. The treatments consisted of periods without or with an initial weed control (0, 21, 35, 49, 63, 77, and 91 days after emergence), with or without application of atrazine in spikely post-emergence. The experiment was carried out in a 2 x 7 randomized blocks design (with and without weed control and seven periods with three replications). The use or not of atrazine was arranged in a split plot design. The most important weed species were Senecio brasiliensis, Urochloa plantaginea, Conyza bonariensis, Sida rhombifolia, and Solanum spp. Corn yield reduced by 15% and 18% with and without application of atrazine, respectively. The number of grains per spike and corn yield were negatively influenced by coexistence with weeds, while the number of rows per spike, the diameter and length of spike were not affected. Corn yield components were not affected by the use of atrazine. The critical period of weed interference prevention was 35 days without atrazine and 23 days with application of atrazine. There is a reduction of the critical period of weed interference prevention on narrow row corn by using atrazine, with no influence of the herbicide on crop yield.Keywords: herbicide, period of coexistence, Zea mays. RESUMO -A interferência causada pelas plantas daninhas pode reduzir em até 80% a produtividade de grãos do feijão quando não manejadas de forma correta. Portanto, a decisão sobre o momento de controlá-las é um dos principais aspectos do manejo integrado. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar o período anterior à interferência das plantas daninhas (PAI) em cultivares de feijão com diferentes tipos de hábitos de crescimento. Adotou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos experimentais foram constituídos de dez períodos de convivência da cultura com as plantas daninhas: 0-7, 0-14, 0-21, 0-28, 0-35, 0-42, 0-49, 0-56, 0-97 (colheita) dias após a emergência (DAE) e mais uma testemunha sem convívio com as plantas daninhas. O PAI foi determinado por meio de distintas abordagens: o nível arbitrário de 5% de perda na produtividade, o nível de tolerância (NT) e o de dano no rendimento econômico (PADRE).
