Influences of temporal order in temporal reproduction

Abstract: Despite the crucial role of complex temporal sequences, such as speech and music, in our everyday lives, our ability to acquire and reproduce these patterns is prone to various contextual biases. In this study, we examined how the temporal order of auditory sequences affects temporal reproduction. Participants were asked to reproduce accelerating, decelerating or random sequences, each consisting of four intervals, by tapping their fingers. Our results showed that the reproduction and the reproduction variabil… Show more

“…Intriguingly, these studies tend to position these task-irrelevant inducers close in time to the target (e.g., within a second in Togoli et al, 2021), which could promote potential perceptual integration. Well-documented phenomena, like ensemble perception (Whitney and Yamanashi Leib 2018), show a tendency to attract individual items toward the ensemble mean (Nakajima et al 1992;Zhu et al 2021;Baykan, Zhu, Allenmark, et al 2023;Baykan, Zhu, Zinchenko, et al 2023). A classic manifestation of this is the time-shrinking illusion, where successive intervals seem to blend into one another (Nakajima et al 1992;Burr et al 2009).…”
