Influences of Photoperiod on Nuclear Androgen Receptor Occupancy in Neuroendocrine Tissues of the Golden Hamster

Abstract: Day length regulates the negative feedback potency of gonadal steroids upon luteinizing hormone (LH) in seasonal breeders such as the golden hamster. We have used an exchange assay employing 3H-R1881 to determine whether nuclear androgen plus receptor levels in the preoptic area, medial basal hypothalamus, or anterior pituitary differ between male hamsters maintained in long or short days. Cell nuclear androgen plus receptor levels in brain and anterior pituitary were significantly lower in intact m… Show more

“…Washingtons Crossing, N.J.) anesthesia and main tained in LD photoperiod for 7 weeks. At this time the animals were anesthetized with ether, and a Silastic capsule (Dow-Coming 602-285, I cm long; ID: 0.062"; OF: 0.125") filled with crystalline Twas inserted s.c. to generate serum androgen concentrations (1.5 ng/m l) equivalent to those in intact males in a LD photoperiod (6). After capsule inser tion, half of the animals were transferred to SD photoperiod.…”
