Influences of Orally Taken Carotenoid-Rich Curly Kale Extract on Collagen I/Elastin Index of the Skin

Abstract: Two differently designed, spatially resolved reflectance spectroscopy-based scanners and two-photon tomography were used for noninvasive in vivo determination of cutaneous carotenoids, and collagen I/elastin aging index of dermis, respectively, in the skin of 29 healthy female volunteers between 40 and 56 years of age. The volunteers received a supplement in the form of a carotenoid-rich natural curly kale extract containing 1650 µg of carotenoids in total (three capsules of 550 µg), once a day. Measurements w… Show more

“…Similar findings were observed in a study observing the skin effects of only zeaxanthin both topically and/or orally [144]. Meinke et al recently fortified their prior finding of the beneficial role of carotenoids in the prevention of skin aging by showing that a natural carotenoid-rich extract could prevent the aging-related collagen I degradation in the dermis and improve the ECM [166]. In their study, 29 healthy middle-aged female volunteers received a supplement in the form of a carotenoid-rich natural curly kale extract containing 1650 µg of carotenoids in total (three capsules of 550 µg), once a day for up to 10 months.…”

“…The more recent link between nutrition and skin aging began in earnest around the year 2000 with the demonstrated increase in peer-reviewed scientific journal reports on this topic [ 12 ]. Thus, the application of: (a) topical administration from outside to inside the skin and (b) the inside by oral consumption of nutritionals to the outer skin layers is now common place and many journal reports exhibit significant improvement for both on a variety of dermal parameters [ 11 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. This review covers, where applicable, the history, chemical structure and sources, biological and biomedical properties in the skin, and, lastly, animal and clinical data on the oral applications of: (a) collagen, (b) ceramide, (c) β-carotene, (d) astaxanthin, (e) coenzyme Q 10 , (f) colostrum, (g) zinc, and (h) selenium in their mode of action or function in improving skin health and various dermal endpoints.…”

“…The ECM of the dermis consists of collagen and is produced by fibroblasts (15). In particular, type I collagen is the most prevalent of the fibril-forming collagens (16,17). Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), a zinc-dependent endopeptidase, is present at sites of acute inflammation and potently degrades type I collagen (18,19).…”
