Cephalopod populations show wide temporal fluctuations in abundance, which have usually been investigated at inter‐annual scales related to environmental variability. However, cephalopods are also strongly linked to seasonal environmental fluctuations owing to their short life cycles and single seasonal breeding. Therefore, population abundance critically depends on the success of breeding and recruitment from the previous year and the optimization of resources in a narrow period of favorable conditions. This adaptation of population dynamics is paramount in marked oligotrophic systems, such as the western Mediterranean Sea. We used monthly landings per unit effort (LPUE) to explore the spatio‐temporal variability in seasonal patterns of three cephalopod species (Illex coindetii, Eledone cirrhosa and Octopus vulgaris). Common trends across the study area were characterized for each species. In all cases, seasonal patterns were geographically aggregated in relation to differences in local environment (i.e., primary production and surface hydro‐climatology). Variability in the mean seasonal pattern over time was also investigated under contrasting environmental or population regimes. The mean seasonal trend was more pronounced in regimes of high‐population densities, suggesting a density‐dependent control that can modify the strength of the environmental forcing in the seasonal patterns. Our study also evidences a spatial synchrony in the seasonal fluctuations of LPUEs. Scales of synchrony ranged from 70 to 200 km, indicating a patchy‐aggregated spatial pattern as a part of complex population structures in the western Mediterranean. Improving our understanding of seasonal dynamics of cephalopods across temporal and spatial scales may lead to improved forecasts and management strategies.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are today's most important tools for the spatial management and conservation of marine species. Yet, the true protection that they provide to individual fish is unknown, leading to uncertainty associated with MPA effectiveness. In this study, conducted in a recently established coastal MPA in Portugal, we combined the results of individual home range estimation and population distribution models for 3 species of commercial importance and contrasting life histories to infer (1) the size of suitable areas where they would be fully protected and (2) the vulnerability to fishing mortality of each species. Results show that the relationship between MPA size and effective protection is strongly modulated by both the species' home range and the distribution of suitable habitat inside and outside the MPA. This approach provides a better insight into the true potential of MPAs in effectively protecting marine species, since it can reveal the size and location of the areas where protection is most effective and a clear, quantitative estimation of the vulnerability to fishing throughout an entire MPA.KEY WORDS: Cuttlefish · Maxent · Marine reserve · Sole · Vulnerability to fishing · White seabream Resale or republication not permitted without written consent of the publisher

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.Conclusions drawn from comparing short-term monitoring data with a baseline data set and water-quality guidelines need to be viewed in the context of numerous physical and biogeochemical mechanisms controlling nutrient concentrations within a system over long timescales. This paper highlights the use of generalized additive models (GAMs) to explore the functional relationships between four commonly used water-quality indicators (total nitrogen, total phosphorous, ammonia, nitrate) and a range of drivers including catchment inflow, wind speed, and tidal current. The results of this GAM assessment highlighted that nutrient concentrations within a subtropical estuary (Broadwater, Australia) is most dependent on catchment inflow. In particular, this assessment indicated the apparent importance of the Nerang River as a determinant of the nutrient concentrations observed in the Broadwater compared with the role of other tributaries, even though these other rivers provide the bulk of the freshwater flow into the system. This assessment also highlighted that the potential effects of monitoring location, tides, wind, and monitoring year need to be accounted for when framing the results of short-term data.
