Influences of Catchment and River Channel Characteristics on the Magnitude and Dynamics of Storage and Re-Suspension of Fine Sediments in River Beds

Abstract: Fine particles or sediments are one of the important variables that should be considered for the proper management of water quality and aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, the effect of catchment characteristics on the performance of an already developed model for the estimation of fine sediments dynamics between the water column and sediment bed was tested, using 13 catchments distributed worldwide. The model was calibrated to determine two optimal model parameters. The first is the filtration parameter… Show more

“…It was already used in studies on sediment budgets at larger scales in the Bléone catchment in order to assess the spatial variations of erosion intensity (Evrard et al, 2011) or the drivers of the temporal variability of SS fluxes (Navratil et al, 2012). The data can also be used to test conceptual or physically‐based models investigating assumptions such as the respective contribution of badlands and the riverbed to SSY (Misset et al, 2019; Park et al, 2019) or the role of the catchment configuration on SS connectivity (Uber et al, 2020).…”

“…The increase in BOD concentrations during the rainy season was likely due to the resuspension of organic matters from sediments under the impact of runoff and turbulence in rainwater [35]. In addition, high temperature, humidity, and inundation could facilitate the decomposition of organic matters in the AH and PMC areas [36].…”
