Influences for Gender Disparity in Academic Neuroradiology

Abstract: Neuroradiology faculty members follow the same male predominance seen in many other specialties of medicine. In this study, issues such as mentoring, role models, opportunities to engage in leadership/research activities, funding opportunities, and mindfulness regarding research productivity are explored.

“… 13 Similar gender disparity has been demonstrated in leadership roles in academic musculoskeletal radiology 14 and neuroradiology. 15 Data from an ongoing prospective study of physicians 7 years after graduation from medical schools in Switzerland showed that women doctors, in particular those with children, had less career success than their male contemporaries, were less advanced in their specialty qualification and less likely to have a mentor, tended to work in small hospitals or private practice, and aspired less often to senior hospital or academic positions. 16 …”

“…Our methodology has been validated in several recent publications. [1][2][3][4][5]9] We obtained a list of orthopedic programs to gather the academic faculty members of each orthopedic department. The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) website enlists a total of 17 university hospitals that offer orthopedic training programs.…”

“…It is known that most surgical specialties are male-dominated. Previous investigations in radiology were able to quantify the disparity and provide strong evidence to suggest that research productivity was a major factor for the ongoing disparity [1][2][3]. These studies found that women were a minority in the academic practice, were at the lower rungs of academic ranks, were disproportionally represented in leadership positions, had lower research productivity and lower H-index scores when compared to men.…”

“…Studies have reported that women doctors receive lower salaries than men, for example, women hospitalists work more but are paid less [12,13]. Neurologists and gastroenterologists also reported that men dominate faculty positions [14,15]. Moreover, women's leadership role in the medical society in Japan and Europe is limited [16,17].…”
