Influence of Zirconium on the Corrosion Passivation of Titanium in Simulated Body Fluid

Abstract: Pure Ti and 85%Ti-15%Zr alloy were sintered in a heat induction high frequency furnace. The corrosion behaviour of Ti and 85%Ti-15%Zr in simulated body fluid (SBF) was studied. The work was achieved using different techniques as the cyclic polarization (PCP), the impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the change of the potentiostatic current with time (PCT) experiments. The morphology of the surfaces of Ti and Ti-Zr after being corroded in SBF for 72 were investigated by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the… Show more

“…The electrolyte was a simulated body fluid (SBF, Gibco ® by Life technologies, New Delhi, India), which is a mixture of the following chemical substances, NaCl, KCl, Na 2 SO 4 , NaHCO 3 , K 2 HPO 4, MgCl 2 .6H 2 O, and CaCl 2 [18]. The manufacturing of the Ti-Zr alloy and Ti-Zr-Ta alloy was carried out with the same reported procedures in the previous study [19].…”

“…A computer-controlled Autolab Potentiostat/Galvanostat (purchased from Metrohm, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) was utilized. The preparation of the working electrodes, which were the fabricated alloys, was carried out as in the published work [17,19]. Also, the reference and counter electrodes were the same ones that were used in the reported study [19].…”

“…These EIS data were fitted using ZSimpWin v.3 software program, and the best equivalent circuit is depicted in Figure . This circuit has been employed as the best fit in many other studies. , The parameters of the circuit can be expressed as follows: the solution resistance, R s ; the two polarization resistances, R P1 and R P2 ; and two constant phase elements, Q 1 and Q 2 . The values of these elements after the different immersion periods of time are gathered in Table .…”

“…The CCT technique has been successfully used in the investigation of the corrosion and corrosion inhibition of metals in the 3.5% NaCl solution. ,, The CCT curves collected at −600 mV (Ag/AgCl) for Al after 1 h immersion in (1) 3.5% NaCl solutions in the absence and presence of (2) 5 × 10 –5 M MDS, (3) 1 × 10 –4 M MDS, and (4) 5 × 10 –4 M MDS are shown in Figure . The currents are seen to increase in the first few moments upon the application of the constant potential value.…”
