THIS STUDY screen the antibacterial and antiviral activities of some bryophytes extracts. The pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes LMG 10470 (L. monocytogenes), Escherichia coli LMG 8223 (E. coli), Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 (B. cereus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa LMG 8029 (P. aeruginosa) were inhibited by the aqueous methanolic extracts (ME) of Imbibryum sp., Barbula convoluta and Trichostomum sp.. The mixture of Imbibryum sp.extract and tetracycline have synergistic effect against P. aeruginosa while the mixing of Trichostomum sp. extract with tetracycline has antagonistic effect against P. aeruginosa.Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of P. aeruginosa, treated with ME of Barbula convolute, Imbibryum sp. and Trichostomum sp.indicated sheath surrounded the bacteria, signs of irregular wrinkled outer surface, adhesion and aggregation of damaged cells, malformations in bacterial shape compared to untreated bacterial control. The bryophyte species screened exhibiting considerable antiviral activity against zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), so the bryophytes have been identified as a new source of antiviral activity. The highest degree of antiviral activity was shown ME of Barbula convoluta, Imbibryum sp. and Trichostomum sp.against ZYMV (94, 92 and 90%, respectively). The tested cucumber plants which mechanically infected by ZYMV and treated with different extracts of the most potent bryophytes (Imbibryum sp), contain high amount of phenolic compounds. The highest contents of total phenol are detected in infected cucumber plant, which treated with benzene extract of Imbibryum sp.,(3.48 mg/g fresh wt) followed by methanol extract (3.19 mg/g fresh wt). The bryophytes extracts have no toxic effect in Wistar Albino rats.

We established a high throughput screening system of African yam tuber lines which contain high contents of total carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy in combination with multivariate analysis. The total carotenoids contents from 62 African yam tubers varied from 0.01 to 0.91 μg･g -1 dry weight (wt). The total flavonoids and phenolic compounds also varied from 12.9 to 229 μg･g -1 and from 0.29 to 5.2 mg･g -1 dry wt. FT-IR spectra confirmed typical spectral differences between the frequency regions of 1,700-1,500, 1,500-1,300 and 1,100-950 cm -1 , respectively. These spectral regions were reflecting the quantitative and qualitative variations of amide I, II from amino acids and proteins (1,700-1,500 cm -1 ), phosphodiester groups from nucleic acid and phospholipid (1,500-1,300 cm ). Principal component analysis (PCA) and subsequent partial least squarediscriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were able to discriminate the 62 African yam tuber lines into three separate clusters corresponding to their taxonomic relationship. The quantitative prediction modeling of total carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds from African yam tuber lines were established using partial least square regression algorithm from FT-IR spectra. The regression coefficients (R 2 ) between predicted values and estimated values of total carotenoids, flavonoids and phenolic compounds were 0.83, 0.86, and 0.72, respectively. These results showed that quantitative predictions of total carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds were possible from FT-IR spectra of African yam tuber lines with higher accuracy. Therefore we suggested that quantitative prediction system established in this study could be applied as a rapid selection tool for high yielding African yam lines.

Spot blotch caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana is a destructive disease of wheat (Triticum spp.) in warm and humid wheat growing regions of the world. Area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) in field experiment was used to find out the role of total phenol content (TPC), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity and lignin deposition in the development of slow blight. Ten recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of spring wheat obtained from the cross between the susceptible parent 'Sonalika' and the resistant parent 'Yangmai 6' along with their parental genotypes were scored for disease severity (DS), AUDPC and lesion size in a field experiment on spot blotch. These lines were also evaluated for TPC, PAL and lignin deposition. The minimum DS, AUDPC and lesion size were recorded in the resistant parent 'Yangmai 6' (13%, 116.04 and 0.23 cm 2 , respectively) and RILs (18%, 113.3 and 0.27 cm 2 , respectively in RIL83 and RIL89) which associated with an elevated level of phenol content (395 mg g -1 fresh weight (wt) at 48 hours after inoculation (hai), PAL (928.41 μmoles cinnamic acid (cna) mg -1 fresh wt) and higher quantity of lignin (84%). While DS, AUDPC and lesion size were comparatively higher in the susceptible parent 'Sonalika' as well as susceptible RILs (100%, 938.27 and 3.43 cm 2 , respectively). Mean TPC (133.5 mg g -1 fresh wt 24 hai, respectively), PAL (248.8 μmoles cna mg -1 fresh wt) and lignin (10%) were significantly lower in the susceptible genotype 'Sonalika' and suscptible RILs. The study indicated that enhanced level of TPC, PAL and higher lignin deposition led to the development of slow blighting of spot blotch in terms of lower AUDPC and smaller lesion size in resistant RILs of wheat.
