Influence of Water Glass Introduction Methods on Selected Properties of Portland Cement

Abstract: This article presents a study of the effect of water glass and its introduction on the hydration of Portland cement and its properties in plastic and solid states. The introduction of sodium water glass into the mixing water extends the setting time of Portland cement by 35%, while introduction into the cement paste reduces it by 24.4%; for potassium water glass, the respective values are 10.8% and 10.8%. The introduction of sodium water glass into the mixing water decreases its consistency by 17.6%; its intro… Show more

“…Potassium water glass (WG) is a clear, transparent viscous, water‐soluble liquid. It finds common employment as an adhesive or protective coating in construction and electronics manufacturing 27,28 . In this study, a straightforward filling method was utilized to combine WG with MF foam, resulting in the formation of an inorganic cross‐linking layer through high‐temperature curing on the surface of MF foam's pore walls.…”

“…It finds common employment as an adhesive or protective coating in construction and electronics manufacturing. 27,28 In this study, a straightforward filling method was utilized to combine WG with MF foam, resulting in the formation of an inorganic crosslinking layer through high-temperature curing on the surface of MF foam's pore walls. This strategic approach imbues the foam with heightened flame retardancy and improved thermal stability, all the while preserving the foam's size and structural porosity.…”

“…The main reason for the increase in pH is the diffusion of calcium hydroxide into the solution as a product of hydration; however, the alkaline cations of sodium and potassium, which are part of the cement, also contribute to this process. For low-alkaline cement, this contribution is small; however, if glass powders or water glass with high alkaline activity are introduced into the cement composition, this contribution can be very significant [ 20 ]. In connection with the preceding, we attempt to investigate the effect of various alkali-containing additives on the process of extraction of alkalis from cement samples.…”
