Influence of Water Content on the Growth of Anodic TiO[sub 2] Nanotubes in Fluoride-Containing Ethylene Glycol Electrolytes

Abstract: The effect of water additions, from 0to50vol% , to an ammonium fluoride/ethylene glycol electrolyte on the composition and morphology of titania-based nanotubes was investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, and nuclear reaction analysis. Further to the presence of units of TinormalO2 , the films contained fluorine, carbon, nitrogen, and probably hydrogen species derived from the electrolyte. The compositions of the films appeared to be relatively i… Show more

“…The presence of fluorides in the electrolyte causes the chemical dissolution of the titanium oxide to form the water-soluble [TiF 6 ] −2 complex. On the other hand, the complex also occurs with the Ti 4+ ions that are ejected at the interface of oxide-electrolyte by the following overall reactions [20][21][22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…Whether or not sidewall corrugation (ripples as in Figure 8.b) occur, has been ascribed to a competition between tube growth rate and tube splitting speed. 225 That is, the rate of oxide tube bottoms eating into the metal substrate vs. the progress of the electrolyte between the nanotubes (chemical dissolution of the cell boundaries). Thus only for cases, where the water content is limited, i.e.…”
