Population growth and the concern about its environmental impact have increased the demand for vegetable oils in recent years. Vegetable oils are used in several industry sectors and have been investigated as an alternative energy source to replace traditional fossil fuels. Knowledge of physical and chemical properties is essential to assess the potential use of vegetable oil in the production of biofuels. The present study aimed to determine the oxidative stability of the seed oil of the babassu palm tree, Attalea vitrivir, native to the Brazilian cerrado and originated from two different regions, before and after storage for 12 months. The relative density of the oil did not differ between regions and did not change over time. Kinematic viscosity was lower for area 1 and increased with storage in oils from both areas. The induction period in the Rancimat test was lower in area 2 and decreased in the stored oil, regardless of the area, though it remained higher than the minimum required for its use as biofuel. The evaluation of oxidation by the oven method also showed satisfactory results, confirming the high thermo-oxidative stability of the babassu oil rich in lauric acid.

The world is currently faced with the depletion of fossil fuel energy sources and their use is associated with environmental pollution. This has triggered the need to seek alternative energy sources that are renewable, sustainable and environmentally benign. Biodiesel, an alternative fuel of interest, is obtainable from biomass feedstocks. In existing biodiesel fuel, there are concerns that it is a contaminant due to its elemental contents, which over time also affect its quality. This study aimed to investigate the influence of a bifunctional catalyst on the conversion of free fatty acids and the elemental composition of biodiesel obtained from waste oils of sunflower and palm feedstocks. The synthesised catalyst was characterised using BET, XRD, FTIR and SEM while ICP-OES and Rancimat were used for elemental contents and oxidation in feedstocks and biodiesels. The effect of Cu, Zn and Fe metals on the stability of synthesised biodiesel was further studied. The catalyst showed characteristics of bifunctionality with improved textural properties necessary for the conversion of high free fatty acids feedstocks to biodiesel, despite increasing Ca content within the produced biodiesel. Sunflower biodiesel showed superior fuel quality, although palm biodiesel had more oxidation stability. An increase in the concentration of metals decreased the induction period, with Cu and Fe being more effective than Zn metal.

The residential sector is responsible for approximately 40% of final energy consumption in the European Union, being a potential target to increase energy efficiency and improve urban air quality. New high-efficiency heating oil boilers have been developed requiring fuel adaption by diminishing the sulfur content in the fuel. The present work has led to the conclusion that further fuel development, including the use of alternative fuels, may be directed to reduce fossil fuel consumption and decrease the formation of pollutants. Specific fuel properties, such as distillation curve and nitrogen content, show an influence on pollutant emissions, especially NO x , which can be reduced below the lowest limit required for gas domestic boilers, which, until now, set the state of the art in terms of NO x emissions. The addition of renewable fuels in heating oil formulations, contributing to a global CO2 decrease, does not affect the reduction in NO x emissions as far as it does not affect the nitrogen content and distillation curve of the fuel. Besides, a map of NO x emissions, useful to predict NO x emissions from the latest generation heating oil boilers, independent upon the type of fuel, has been inferred, and an equation has been proposed to guarantee low NO x emissions depending upon fuel properties.
