Influence of vitamin D in bone healing

Abstract: Introduction: Vitamin D is an hormone whose function is to maintain calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in order to ensure bone mineralization. Vitamin-D deficiency can lead to severe diseases, including an atypical mineralization of bone, because it decreases osteoblasts activity. It has become increasingly common and it has been mainly observed in obese people who avoid direct sunlight exposure to their skin and have a vitamin D-deficient diet. Objectives: Due to the high incidence of hypovitaminosis D in the… Show more

“…Also, some studies revealed adequate calcium/vitamin D is important to provide sufficient calcium for mineralization to prevent bone loss. [17][18][19][20][21][22] In this case report, complete healing and bone regeneration for horizontal bone defect around the implant which is observed by increase 3-4 mm bone height and 1-2 mm in bone thickness after one year of treatment. This is approving the effectiveness of nonsurgical treatment and LLLT in the treatment of peri-implantitis.…”

“…The vitamin D–parathyroid hormone axis (PTH-Vit D) plays an important role in maintaining bone mass density and calcium homeostasis ( 15 ). The active form of vitamin D, namely, 1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol, regulates the absorption of calcium from the intestine ( 15 , 16 ). Studies have shown that a vitamin D deficiency slows down the healing of broken bones.…”
