Objectives: To evaluate and compare the buccolingual inclinations of maxillary and mandibular first molars in untreated children and adults. Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty-eight subjects were selected and divided into three groups, as follows: (1) age 6-9 years, N ¼ 46; (2) age 10-19 years, N ¼ 56; and (3) age 25-35 years, N ¼ 36. For each subject, existing cone beam computed tomography images were used, and the long axis for each maxillary and mandibular first molar was determined. The converge angles formed by the long axis of left and right maxillary first molars and by the long axis of left and right mandibular first molars were measured. Results: The maxillary molars exhibited buccal inclination, with the converge angle of 21.18 6 9.58 in group 1, 17.38 6 8.68 in group 2, and 9.38 6 7.38 in group 3. Statistically significant differences were found between groups 1 and 3 and groups 2 and 3, but not between groups 1 and 2. The mandibular molars exhibited lingual inclination, with the converge angle of 34.98 6 118 for group 1, 26.68 6 9.28 for group 2, and 26.18 6 7.78 for group 3. Statistically significant differences were found between groups 1 and 2 and groups 1 and 3, but not between groups 2 and 3. Conclusions: Maxillary first molars exhibited buccal inclination. Adults displayed less inclination than did children. Mandibular first molars exhibited lingual inclination. Adults displayed less inclination than did children. Some degree of curve of Wilson should be maintained at the end of orthodontic treatment to fulfill physiologic needs and stability. (Angle Orthod. 2019;89:87-92.)

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the angular measurement data (incisor's long axis to NA line) and the third-order angle (TA) according to Andrews' description. Materials and Methods: The materials in the study included the lateral radiographs and corresponding dental casts of 32 males and 35 females between 10 and 25 years of age, regardless of their skeletal and dental relationships. All subjects were white and none had undergone orthodontic therapy. Using lateral radiographs, upper and lower incisor angulations were assessed in reference to the NA line. These data were compared with third-order angles derived from direct dental cast measurements, which were performed using an incisor inclination recording appliance. Results: The third-order angle measurements recorded from the dental casts were a mean of 16.2Њ (SD ϭ 5.3Њ) smaller than the axial inclination according to the NA line. In this sample, there was a range of 42.7Њ for the TA variable (mean ϭ 5.6Њ, SD ϭ 9.73Њ) and 47Њ for the 1NA/deg variable (mean ϭ 21.7Њ, SD ϭ 8.67Њ). A highly significant correlation existed (r ϭ 0.84) between Andrews' angle and the inclination estimated in reference to the NA line. Conclusion: Incisor inclination can be better estimated by recognizing the relationship between the torque angle and the axial inclination referred to the NA line. Third-order measurements using dental casts can offer a simple way to get an objective and rapid vision of the incisor's inclination.

Corticotomy for Correction of Skeletal Anterior Open Bite Using Miniplates as Skeletal Anchorage (A Clinical and Cone Beam Comparative Study)

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of corticotomy and miniplates' usage as skeletal anchorage for maxillary molars' intrusion during correction of skeletal anterior open bite (SAOB). Patients, materials and methods: A sample of 22 patients with an age range from 14 to 22 years, suffering from skeletal anterior open bite with increased posterior maxillary vertical height. The participants were randomly divided into two groups according to the corticotomy approach. Group I: both buccal and palatal corticotomies were performed. Group II: only buccal corticotomy was performed. Buccal miniplates and palatal mini-screws were used as skeletal anchorage for maxillary molars' intrusion assisted by corticotomy. The measurements, including maxillary dento-alveolar heights (mm), bucal crestal alveolar bone heights (mm), bucco-palatal angulations (B-P˚) and mesio-distal angulations (M-D˚) of right and left maxillary first permanent molars, 4.5 months after intrusion commencement. Results: The dento-alveolar height as well as the buccal crestal alveolar height decreased significantly after intrusion in both groups (p≤0.001 and p≤0.05, respectively), but without significant differences between them. Similarly, the M-D and B-P angulations increased significantly after intrusion in both groups (p≤0.01 and p≤0.001, respectively), with no significant differences between both groups. Conclusions: The current corticotomy approaches and temporary anchorage devices (TADs) were similarly effective for maxillary molar intrusion in cases of (SAOB), but complete correction of SAOB was not achieved. Both the posterior maxillary dento-alveolar and buccal crestal alveolar bone heights diminished similarly in both corticotomy methods. Neither mesio-distal nor bucco-palatal angulations of maxillary first permanent molar crown revealed major changes in matching both approaches of intrusion.
