The effect of a repeated burning on soil hydrology and erosive parameters was studied on a Mediterranean forest soil (Rendzic leptosol) with the aim of identifying the effects of the fire and climatic parameters related to the post-fire runoff and soil loss. The study was carried out in an Experimental Permanent Field Station (La Concordia), close to Valencia (Spain).This field station is located on a calcareous hillside facing SSE, and is comprised of nine erosion plots (20×4 m). Firstly, experimental fires were performed in June 1995 with two fire treatments (T1 or high severity fire and T2 or moderate severity fire) and a control one Fire effects were reflected in the erosion rates. Soil losses prior to the 2003 fire, in both fire treatments and in the control one, were scant relative to post-fire levels. However, six months after the repeated fire (period II) and almost one year later (period IV), soil losses increased into two orders of magnitude coinciding with the post-fire bare soil augment. The repeated fire impact and rainfall intensity magnified runoff and soil loss. Significant linear relationships between rainfall intensity, runoff and soil loss, were obtained for the burned plots. Erosion in Mediterranean landscapes: Changes and future challenges

Intense erosion processes are widespread in the Mediterranean region, and include sheet wash erosion, rilling, gullying, shallow landsliding, and the development of large and active badlands in both subhumid and semi-arid areas. This review analyses the main environmental and human features related to soil erosion processes, and the main factors that explain the extreme variability of factors influencing soil erosion, particularly recent land use changes. The importance of erosion in the Mediterranean is related to the long history of human activity in a region characterized by low levels of annual precipitation, the occurrence of intense rainstorms and long-lasting droughts, high evapotranspiration, the presence of steep slopes and the occurrence of recent tectonic activity, together with the recurrent use of fire, overgrazing and farming. These factors have resulted in a complex landscape in which intensification and abandonment, wealth and poverty can co-exist. The changing conditions of national and international markets and the evolution of population pressure are now the main drivers explaining land use changes, including farmland abandonment in mountain areas, the expansion of some subsidized crops to marginal lands, and the development of new terraces affected by landslides and intense soil erosion during extreme rainstorm events. The occurrence of human-related forest fires affecting thousands of hectares each year is an increasing problem in both the northern and southern areas of the Mediterranean basin. Here, we highlight the rise of new scientific challenges in controlling the negative consequences of soil erosion in the Mediterranean region: (i) to reduce the effects and extent of forest fires, and restructure the spatial organization of abandoned landscapes; (ii) to provide guidance for making EU agricultural policy more adapted to the complexity and fragility of Mediterranean environments; (iii) to develop field methods and models to improve the identification of runoff and sediment contributing areas; (iv) to contribute to the conservation of landscapes (i.e. bench-terraced fields) having high cultural and productivity values; (v) to improve knowledge of the hydrological and geomorphological functioning of badlands, with the aim of reducing sediment yield and accessibility; (vi) to better understand the effect of climate change on soil erosion in the Mediterranean region; and (vii) to improve quantitative information on long-term soil erosion. Wildfire increases the probability of debris flows posing hazardous conditions where values-at-risk exist downstream of burned areas. Conditions and processes leading to postfire debris flows usually follow a general sequence defined here as the postfire debris flow hazard cascade: biophysical setting, fire processes, fire effects, rainfall, debris flow, and values-at-risk. Prediction of postfire debris flow hazards is a problem of identifying and understanding the spatial and temporal interactions within this cascade. Models exist that can predict each or several components of the cascade but no single model or prediction approach exists with capacity to link the entire sequence. Assessment of the uncertainty inherent with each of these approaches is limited and compounds if these predictive approaches are integrated or otherwise linked. We summarize present knowledge of the processes involved in this postfire debris flow hazard cascade and identify uncertainties in terms of knowledge gaps, contradictions in current process understanding, stochastic system variables, and limits to data to support hazard prediction. Understanding these uncertainties can improve delineation of areas threatened by postfire debris flows, can guide future research, and, when addressed, contribute to development of comprehensive and robust modeling and prediction systems that may ultimately reduce threats to values-at-risk.
