Excess levels of organic and inorganic matters in the discharge from sugarcane mill effluent (SCME) wastewater, causes the earnest environmental issue. In this study, a single unit integrated ultrasonic membrane anaerobic system (IUMAS) has been investigated for industrial sugarcane wastewater treatment. As the “Membrane-fouling” is one of the main constraints of IUMAS which eventually reduce the processing ability. In the present study, most researchers resort to cost reduction. IUMAS was alternatively applied as an economical approach for SCME wastewater treatment. The application of “Multiple-analysis” methods (COD, BOD, TSS) and three kinetic models during the treatment, suggested the specific range of organic loading rate to produce biogas. The result showed the increased methane gas production up to 80% in the biogas, with 94 -96% of COD removal efficiency from the SCME wastewater. Results concluded the effective efficiency of IUMAS to reduce the membrane fouling and treatment of SCME wastewater as well as enhanced production of methane gas.

Anaerobic codigestion (AnCoD) has attracted attention owing to its advantages over conventional anaerobic digestion, and attempts are still going on to develop methods for improving the efficiency of this technology. Mostly, addition of cosubstrates without applying a proper pretreatment cannot adequately enhance the performance of the digestion. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive study on different pretreatment methods specific to the wide range of cosubstrates. This review aimed to (i) categorize pretreatment techniques that have been developed for improving AnCoD, (ii) present the results of the studies on the effect of pretreatment on improving AnCoD, and (iii) provide a comparison between pretreatment methods and their application for different types of cosubstrates. The findings primarily validated the influence of pretreatment to enhance the process by increasing biodegradability, improved hydrolysis, reduced hydraulic retention time (HRT), and improved methane production. The five main categories of pretreatment employed in codigestion included the following: mechanical, thermal, chemical, biological, and hybrid pretreatment. Among them, mechanical and biological pretreatment have the most and least application in codigestion, respectively. Greater efforts are required on the application of biological pretreatment and cost–benefit analysis of different pretreatment options on the variety of the cosubstrates. Digitally controlled reactors can optimize biological reactions and process control through a neural network system. This study reports on the design, fabrication, and automation of a laboratory‐scale anaerobic reactor for the management of agrifood byproducts and bioenergy recovery. The process described here can digitally control the operational parameters, which is beneficial for stable methane production. The proposed process comprises the digital measurement of temperature, pH, humidity, biogas volume, and methane composition by integrating the data in a processor module. The proposed automated reactor can assist significantly in controlling and monitoring the anaerobic digestion process, providing decision making during waste management and bioenergy recovery. A case study is described with the application of automated reactors in a pilot‐scale plant, operated with the flow of 8 m3 slaughterhouse wastewater per day and a biogas production of 10 m3 h−1. The automated pilot‐scale process presents many advantages, including a continuous mode of operation and a faster adaptation of the microorganisms to the substrate, improving biogas production.
