Influence of the volute cross-sectional shape on mixed inflow turbine performances

Abstract: The volute is an essential element in the centrifugal machines. Improving its performance is an effective way to improve the total performance of the turbine. The purpose of this study is to replace the accelerating and guiding nozzle vanes by exploring different design possibilities on the cross-sectional area convergence of the volute, since a decreasing area is then associated with expansion in the subsonic regime. The work is extended to a mixed inflow turbine using the new volute cross sections under puls… Show more

“…A similar study was conducted by Meghnine et al, 13 again investigating asymmetrical volute designs but this time for a mixed flow rotor. The authors observed clear vortex generation in all of designs studied and concluded that the volute volume is critical to vortex development.…”

“…Aerospace 2017, 4, 56 4 of 21 a mixed flow rotor design was investigated by [10]. The authors observed clear vortex generation in each housing design and concluded that the volute can be occupied by one or more vortices and that the volute volume is critical in decreasing the number of vortices.…”

“…Their results show that the twin-entry turbine provides the best compromise in terms of performances at different pressure ratio and significant increase in swallowing capacity. The investigation of Meghnine et al [16] on volute crosssectional shape of mixed inflow turbine reveals that flattened volute cross section in the radial direction achieves significant Mach number values reaching the highest swallowing capacity. This paper presents the development of a new twinentry turbine volute design shown on Figure 1.…”
