Influence of the ultrasonic vibration amplitude on the melt pool dynamics and the weld shape of laser beam welded EN AW-6082 utilizing a new excitation system for laser beam welding

Abstract: Laser beam welding is a commonly used technology for joining similar and dissimilar materials. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the weld, the introduction of ultrasonic vibration into the weld zone has been proposed [5]. The ultrasonic system consists of an electronic control, a power supply, a piezoelectric converter and a sonotrode, which introduces the vibration into the weld zone. Its proper design is of great importance for the process performance. Furthermore, the effects of ultrasound in… Show more

“…Mechanical oscillations can also be induced locally in the molten metal area through various methods, such as the Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) welding process [ 22 ], high-frequency oscillations with piezoelectric transducers, voltage pulses over DC welding current, and vibration of filler rods in TIG or wires in MIG/MAG welding [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. While these techniques minimally impact the base metal, they significantly improve the weld bead’s microstructure and mechanical characteristics.…”

“…At present, the addition of ultrasonic-assisted welding has become a vital regulation method. Due to the high quality of welding and fewer pores, an increasing number of researchers have introduced ultrasound into laser welding [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”
