Influence of the Thickness of a Nanolayer Composite Coating on Values of Residual Stress and the Nature of Coating Wear

Abstract: The article discusses the influence of the thickness of the wear-resistant layer of the Zr-ZrN-(Zr,Al,Si)N nanolayer composite coating on the values of residual stress and the nature of coating wear. The study focused on coatings with wear-resistant layer thicknesses of 2.0, 4.3, 5.9, and 8.5 µm, deposited using filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition (FCVAD) technology. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) method based on the anisotropy of the elasticity modulus was used to find the values of the residual stress. The … Show more

“…Let us consider the influence of the nanolayer coating structure on the pattern cracking using the example of the Zr,Nb-(Zr,Nb)N-(Zr,Nb,Al)N coating ( Figure 6 ). In this coating, the nanolayers are characterized by a balanced combination of considerable hardness and ductility [ 57 , 58 , 59 ]. Figure 6 exhibits the structure of the coating that was deposited on a carbide substrate after the turning of steel.…”

“…According to a number of papers [ 2 , 3 , 21 , 35 , 36 , 51 , 52 , 53 ], due to nanolayer structure, the coating demonstrates high hardness at elevated temperatures and high oxidation resistance. It was assumed that the coating had a three-layer structure [ 35 , 38 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 ].…”

“…The influence of the parameters of coating TiN and ZrN by methods of magnetron sputtering and CIB on their hardness is considered in the works [2,8,10,[12][13][14][15][16]. The maximum hardness of coatings at a stoichiometry of structure reached by optimization of technological parametersthe pressure of reaction gas, bias voltage, induction of a magnetic field, and discharge current is noted.…”

“…The accumulation and formation of stress lead to particle fracture that results in stress relaxation with Al surrounding matrix transferring the load to neighboring particles. Therefore, the mentioned alloy characteristics hinder the forecasting of the mechanical properties of the AlSi 9 Cu 3 alloys, as well as their mechanical behavior modeling. The work in [19] established the influence of the thickness of the wear-resistant layer of the Zr-ZrN-(Zr, Al, Si)N nanolayer composite coating on the values of residual stress and the nature of coating wear. The authors in [20] devised a superhydrophobic coating, which was prepared from recyclable materials to provide a sustainable and low-cost solution, with potential applications to Author Contributions: Conceptualization, Y.-C.H., S.K.S., M.S.…”
