Influence of the Solution-Treatment Temperature and Short Aging Times on The Electrochemical Corrosion Behaviour of Uns S32520 Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Abstract: Sigma phase leads to deterioration of corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steels (SDSS) and its volume fraction increases as the time which the materials is exposed in determined temperature increases. In the present study, the effect of the short aging time on the formation of the sigma phase and on the corrosion behavior of UNS S32520 SDSS at 3.5% sodium chloride solution was evaluated using microstructural characterization, linear potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance s… Show more

“…The mechanism of nucleation and growth occurs when the chromium content in the ferrite phase is inferior to 23% (mass) and the thermal treatment of aging is performed above 500°C. For this mechanism, the diffusion occurs with a greater reduction in the Gibbs free energy and phase α' is more roughly formed than in the spinodal decomposition, because of the formation of coherent interfaces (Cavalcanti, Muterlle & Reinke, 2019, Haupt, Silva, Falcade, Santos & Reguly, 2019, Kisasoz, Gurel & Karaaslan, 2016, Mehta, Jadhav, Shaikh, Kumar & Kirwai, 2019, Nithin, Sekar & Joseph, 2019, Ogawa & Osuki, 2020, Powar, Gujar, Manthani, Pawar & Singh, 2017, Valeriano, Correa, Mariano, Robin & Machado, 2019.…”

“…Among duplex stainless steels, the super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) with a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 42 showcases outstanding strength and corrosion resistance. It also maintains high-temperature strength exceeding 300 MPa at 700 °C and a low thermal-expansion coefficient (13.5 × 10 −6 ppm/°C) [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. These attributes significantly enhance the safety of Li-ion battery casings.…”
