“…This enhancement mechanism relies on the presence of defect states in the TiO 2 , which enabled sub-bandgap absorption [102]. The rate of photocatalytic destruction of oxalic acid increased with TiO 2 modified with Au nanoparticles in comparison to the pure TiO 2 [103]. Remarkable influence of the pH on the particle size of Au was observed by photoreduction method.…”

“…The size of Au nanoparticle decreases in the photoreduction method by increasing the pH of the medium containing gold salt solution with TiO 2 which results in improvement of the photocatalytic activity (Table 4). At pH 9 fast precipitation of Au(OH) n Cl 4−n takes place and further the reduced gold is not deposited on the TiO 2 surface [103]. With the increase in the number of metal nanoparticle serving as effective electron traps, the photocatalytic activity increases only to a certain extent.…”

“…Although these methods have been demonstrated to be quite effective, getting fine control over particle size, size distribution and composition in the final materials still remains challenging [75]. Interestingly, noble metal loading of 1% or lower is generally regarded as optimal for a significant increase in the photocatalytic activity [58,76,77].…”
