Influence of the Nocturnal Effect on the Estimated Global CO2 Flux

Abstract: We found that significant errors occurred when diurnal data instead of diurnal–nocturnal data were used to calculate the daily sea-air CO2 flux (F). As the errors were mainly associated with the partial pressure of CO2 in seawater (pCO2w) and the sea surface temperature (SST) in the control experiment, pCO2w and SST equations were established, which are called the nocturnal effect of the CO2 flux. The root-mean-square error between the real daily CO2 flux (Freal) and the daily CO2 flux corrected for the noctur… Show more

“…At this mooring site, temperature was the largest contributor to the pCO 2sea variability and using the annual air-sea CO 2 fluxes based on the nighttime (21:17-06:17) measurements would reverse the direction of F CO2 from source (28.6 mmol m −2 year −1 ) to sink (−4.5 mmol m −2 year −1 ) (Figure 12c). A recent study verified that the global CO 2 uptake increased by 11% after considering the nocturnal effect (Jin et al, 2022). To improve the accuracy of annual F CO2 estimates, besides to incorporating Chla data into the assimilation (Valsala & Maksyutov, 2010) and freshwater discharge flux in the simulation (Sarma et al, 2013), it is essential to consider diurnal pCO 2sea variability and the controlling mechanism in modeling studies.…”

“…Eleventh, Jin et al [43] documented that significant errors occurred when diurnal data were used to replace diurnal-nocturnal data to estimate the daily sea-air CO 2 flux (F). Considering that the errors were mainly controlled with the partial pressure of CO 2 in seawater (pCO 2w ) and the sea surface temperature (SST) in the control experiment, pCO 2w and SST equations of the nocturnal effect of the CO 2 flux were established.…”
