Influence of the machined surface roughness on the pitting behavior of 304 stainless steel

Abstract: The relationship between specimens with different machined surface roughness and pitting resistance was explored using the critical pitting temperature (CPT), critical pitting potential (E p ), and FeCl 3 pitting immersion tests. Compared with the arithmetic mean deviation of the surface contour (Ra), the depth-width ratio could characterize the mathematical relationship between the machined surface roughness and pitting parameters more simply. With an increase in the depth-width ratio, the CPT and E p of 304 … Show more

“…[1] However, in practical application, local corrosion is a common corrosion mode in 304 SS, originating from the local breakdown of passive film. [2] Chloride, as an important characteristic of environmental factor, has an effect on pitting corrosion of 304 SS. For example, Zhang et al investigated the electrochemical corrosion behavior of 304 SS in chloride ion solutions, and indicated that the stability of 304 SS passive film decreased with the increase of Clion concentration in the solution.…”
